The frustration continued for Hermann Maier, one of the most dominating forces on the Alpine Word Cup circuit in decades.

The frustration continued for Hermann Maier, one of the most dominating forces on the Alpine Word Cup circuit in decades.

After nearly losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident in August of 2001, the two-time Olympic gold medallist and three-time World Cup champion attempted a comeback this August at a training camp in Chile. He re-injured his leg while gate skiing, and told a German magazine that he will likely miss yet a second season on the World Cup – but still plans on making a comeback.

"Retirement is out of the question. I am not thinking about it, I’ve never spoken about it," said the 29-year-old.

"I only know that it will take a long time, maybe until March, maybe even longer. I know my body and when I listen to it, it looks very gloomy."

The skiing star also said that parts of his right leg are still numb, and that he doesn’t think he will ever be in top form again.
