Higgins leads Whistler athletes in sprint triathlon

A handful of Whistler triathletes headed to North Vancouver for the 19 th annual North Shore Spring Triathlon this past weekend, completing a 740-metre swim, a 20-kilometre bike, and a 5 km run.

A handful of Whistler triathletes headed to North Vancouver for the 19 th annual North Shore Spring Triathlon this past weekend, completing a 740-metre swim, a 20-kilometre bike, and a 5 km run. Five of those athletes found the podium and placed well overall in a field of over 320 participants.

David Higgins had a strong day in particular, placing fourth overall for all age categories and first in the men’s 35 to 39 division. He was third out of the water, 12 th on the bike and third in the run to finish with a total time of 41 minutes and 19 seconds.

Greg McDonnell, entering at the last minute to take another athlete’s place, was 23 rd overall and second in the 35 to 39 age category with a time of 1:05:25. He had a slower swim — his second time in the pool this year — but caught up with the 11 th fastest bike time of the day to move up almost 70 spots.

Greg Sandkuhl was 39 th overall and first in the men’s 60 to 64 age category by a long margin with a time of 1:07:32.

Christine Suter placed 43 rd overall and second in the women’s 40 to 44 race in a time of 1:07:56.

Karen Blaylock was first in the women’s 50 to 54 race and 102 nd overall with a time of 1:15:22.

Brandi Higgins was ninth in the women’s 35 to 39 race with a time of 1:18:53.

Jennifer Leigh was 11 th in women’s 40 to 44 in 1:20: 31.

Gabriele Moeller was 17 th in the same category in 1:24:04.

Darlene Knapton was 15 th in women’s 45 to 49 in 1:37:38.
