High school girls strong in soccer provincials

The Whistler Secondary Storm Senior Girls Soccer Team earned a spot in the high school provincial championships after successfully holding off other challengers from Zone 5.

In the playoffs in May, Whistler faced teams from Mt. Currie, Pemberton, West Point Grey and Pender Harbor.

From June 2-4 they played five games against the top soccer teams in the province in the A Division at Southridge School in Surrey, with a roster of 21 girls aged 13 to 18 in the Under 18 category.

Although the team fought through injuries – a broken bone, and some torn ligaments and sprains – and played their best soccer of the season, they were no match for the top teams where the average age was 17. Still, under the coaching of Bernard Messeguer, the team was voted runner-up in the Sportsmanship Awards.

The team’s year-end barbecue and awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 25 at Myrtle Philip.
