HIT wraps up summer

Tuesday night projects take a rest

Every second Tuesday during the summer the Whistler-Blackcomb sponsored Habitat Improvement Team takes on a different project in the area, ranging from cleaning wetlands to rehabilitating trails to planting new vegetation.

For the second year HIT volunteers also helped put together donations for an ongoing Rotary International project in Romania, one of eight projects completed this summer. The HIT group’s other projects included:

• Rebuilding the water bars and cleaning up Northwest Passage trail, reducing erosion while improving the appearance and functionality of the trail. This is an ongoing project which HIT advances every year.

• Cleaning garbage and construction debris from the Lower Singing Pass Trail, while improving drainage and the trail experience. HIT will revisit the trail again next spring.

• Clearing brush from trails in the Demonstration Forest, another annual HIT commitment. This year crews worked on the Upper Riverside Trail.

• Three nights working with the Whistler Fisheries Stewardship Group to improve habitat along the River of Golden Dreams. On the first night fish structures were put into place to create fish habitat, the second night volunteers planted along the riverbanks, and the third night crews put in split rail fencing to keep people out of more sensitive areas along the river.

Since 1997 HIT volunteers have taken on 72 projects.
