Happy campers at Holiday Inn Good year for Whistler hotel, name change for corporate mothership By Chris Woodall Whistler's Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort general manager Bruce Wienberg toted up his numbers and now has a big smile on his face. With its fiscal year (April 30) done, the Whistler Village hotel finds it has seen revenues increase 9.5 per cent over the previous year. "Occupancy jumped 5.3 per cent despite the 22 per cent increase in available rental units in the resort during the past 12 months," Wienberg says. "I think the owners of our units will be happy," the general manager says. Changes internally and a boost in rates from what the SunSpree resort charged in the past had a healthy effect on revenues, but Whistler's popularity with foreign vacationers was an important factor, too, Wienberg says. "Tour operators were getting the word out about Whistler," Wienberg says, especially in the U.S. where there was a "dramatic" increase in package sales. Business from the U.K. and Australia was impressive, too. The hotel’s new guest services manager is Tim Campbell, who comes to Whistler from Holiday Inn Victoria. In the wider corporate world, Holiday Inn takes on a new name. Holiday Hospitality, the parent company for Holiday Inn Hotels, has announced its name change to Bass Hotels and Resorts, reflecting both the ownership of British mega brewer Bass PLC and Bass's $3 billion purchase of Inter-Continental Hotels and Resorts. The Bass purchase gives the giant more than 2,700 hotels with more than 484,000 rooms. Don't worry, sleep happy: Whistler's Holiday Inn will keep its name as is, Wienberg says. As for the near future, expansion of the Whistler hotel is about to be launched. Municipal council will get a look at the application soon, Wienberg says. The expansion will add 165 rooms and an outdoor pool to the current facility. The additional construction will be over the current parking lot space, next to the Hard Rock Café . There is no date for completion at this time, the general manager says.
