Police are treating a body found in a charred vehicle north of Squamish as a homicide, according to RCMP.
Last Wednesday, June 14, Squamish RCMP responded to a report of a burned vehicle on the Cheekye Forest Service Road. When they arrived, they discovered a man's remains inside the SUV.
The RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been brought in to investigate.
"Due to the difficulty of fire investigations and the suspicious nature of the incident IHIT was engaged from the onset," said Cpl. Sascha Banks in a release. "It has now been determined the male's death was a homicide and IHIT has taken conduct of the file in conjunction with the Squamish RCMP and the BC Coroner's Service."
Police have yet to identify the deceased, but said the vehicle located was determined to be a red 2000 GMC Yukon XL.
In the early stages of the investigation, Mounties said the risk to the public, if any, has yet to be determined. More information will be shared "if there is a need to notify the public," according to the release.
Anyone with information about the male or the vehicle should contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448, or Sea to Sky Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they wish to remain anonymous.
They are also asking for anyone who may have spotted any suspicious activity on the Cheekye Forest Service Road between June 13 and 14 to come forward.
