Hostel celebrates grand opening Sept. 9

Hostelling International will officially open its new hostel in Cheakamus Crossing at noon on Thursday, Sept. 9.

Hostelling International will officially open its new hostel in Cheakamus Crossing at noon on Thursday, Sept. 9.

The hostel has been providing accommodation for budget travelers since July 1, but the grand opening next week is an opportunity for members of the public to tour the facility and understand what it adds to Whistler's accommodation mix.

For 41 years Hostelling International's 25-bed Whistler hostel sat on the shores of Alta Lake as the community around it grew and morphed into a destination resort.

The new hostel, in the former 2010 Olympic athletes' village, hosted athletes and coaches from places such as Lebanon, Ireland and Iran during the Olympics. The Olympic-legacy building, which is now open to all, is unlike any other hostel in the HI network. It's purpose-built with the tech-savvy adventure traveller in mind.

The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre will be providing a performance at the noon opening and ribbon cutting.

A media reception will be held prior to the official opening.
