Environment Canada is warning Whistlerites to brace for what could be record-breaking temperatures this Labour Day long weekend.

In a "special weather statement" issued Saturday, Sept. 2, an "unseasonably strong ridge" of high pressure is forecast to build over the province this weekend, with temperatures expected to rise into the low 30s by Sunday.

"Under this weather pattern, the airmass will also become quite stagnant," the statement read. "Combined with developing outflow winds, the wildfire smoke will likely make its way out to the coast again, beginning Sunday night or on Labour Day Monday.

While the air quality index for Whistler currently sits at low-risk, the "concentration and location of wildfire smoke will be a wildcard factor for forecasting temperatures and may determine whether records are broken."

Computerized weather models indicate that the high-pressure ridge will be "quite persistent" with the hot weather lasting until at least Wednesday.
