Housing registry starts Sept. 15 The Whistler Housing Authority is establishing registries for full-time Whistler residents seeking to rent or own affordable employee housing projects. The registries will replace the lottery process which has been used to allocate units in new projects in the past. The registration period, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31, is part of a new wait list process for resident housing that will apply to projects developed in the future, as well as units in existing employee housing projects when they are re-assigned. A point system, which considers factors such as length of time an applicant has lived in Whistler, will assign priority for those wishing to buy resident housing. The same system will also be used for the initial ranking for rental housing, after which it will be first-come, first-served. The wait lists should enable applicants to monitor their progress up the list and predict the length of wait for a given type of unit. The lists will also help quantify the demand for both rental and employee-owned housing. The lottery system which was used previously did not address concerns about the lack of certainty for long-term residents in obtaining affordable housing. The lottery system also did not address the re-allocation of rental units or re-sale of units which are restricted to employees. Registration forms can be picked up at the WHA office at 4335 Main Street and at municipal hall, starting Sept. 15. Applicants will be asked to complete a statutory declaration and provide documentation to show they've been a Whistler resident for at least one full year.
