Whistler’s outdoor volleyball community is alive and well, and ready to serve up its biggest season yet.
Some 144 people signed up at the Whistler Outdoor Volleyball Association’s (WOVA) open registration night on June 5, and all 15 team spots in the social league were quickly sold out. The intermediate category also came close to filling up, with space remaining for just two teams.
Both leagues are co-ed, four-against four, and require six people per team.
The two-on-two competitive league is still relatively wide open, although league co-ordinator Scott Rogers is encouraging players to step up.
“I know we’ve got the talent here, and we do expect the intermediate division to fill up in the next few days,” he said. “The competitive league is for anyone who has played any competitive volleyball and is up for a challenge.”
The social league plays on Monday nights at 6 p.m., starting on June 18. The competitive league plays Wednesdays at 1 p.m., followed by the intermediate league at 6 p.m., starting on June 20.
Rogers has started a new website this year at www.wova.ca which will be used to post schedules and results, and keep members of WOVA up to date on events.
“Teams will be able to show up, know who they are playing against and what time they’re playing,” said Rogers. “All captains will be responsible for is making sure their teams show up. We’ll also have someone telling people when to get on the courts, letting people know when five minutes is left, and recording the scores.”
The league got a boost from the Resort Municipality of Whistler, which has agreed to add a third court to Rainbow Park this year by removing the grass separating the existing courts, and widening the courts. Work began on that project this week.
This year WOVA is also planning weekly socials for players, as well as some bigger social events.
