Huge turnout for King of the Rail

54 skiers and snowboarders

With light rain to grease the rails and soft, spring snow to land in, competitors held nothing back in the first King of the Rail competition last Saturday (Jan. 7). The field included 54 skiers and snowboarders, and probably twice as many spectators.

Skiers and riders broke out every variation of rail trick imaginable, including spins, gaps, presses, and change-ups.

At the end of the night all of the competitors cast votes for the rider or skier who landed the best tricks, with almost half of the $2 entry fees going to the winner.

Nick Heringa walked away with the first crown, as well as $100 in cash for his night, while the rest of the prize money was split among Derek Drysdale, the top male skier, Crystal Lee, the top female skier, junior skier Simon Louwe and junior snowboarder Max Ripper.

Steve Kopyt of the Whistler Valley Snowboard Club won the draw prize for the Atomic skis, Sarah Doolaar won the Atomic Snowboard, and other prizes were awarded from Nintendo, Atomic and Roxy.

The next event is the Queen of the Rail on Jan. 21, which is for women only. The cost is $2 to enter with a valid Night Moves lift pass, and registration gets underway at 5 p.m. in the Blackcomb Daylodge. The contest runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will be judged by the athletes.
