Hula and howl for a cause

Three fundraising events aim to support much-needed emergency surgery fund for WAG

What: Hawaiian Luau Party

When: Wednesday, July 12

Where: Joey Chan’s Creekside eatery

Tickets: $25

The Whistler Animals Galore (WAG) animal shelter is hosting three events worth barking about for the month of July.

"One of the things we talked about at our recent AGM was the need for setting up an emergency critical care fund," said shelter director Carol Coffey. "We are trying to be more proactive."

Monies raised from the three events will help fund WAG’s veterinary expenses. Coffey’s goal is to raise $1,500.

While funding from the Resort Municipality of Whistler’s Community Enrichment Program has helped set the shelter on stable ground for the next few months, unexpected emergency surgeries put the shelter in the red. There is also no regional funding for the shelter despite it servicing animals from D’Arcy to Whistler.

"It’s so difficult when we have these cases," Coffey said of emergency surgeries. "We get a call from Dr. Lane for a $1,500 surgery and there is always this panic about where we are going to get this money. Those surgical cases just kill us."

A newly formed animal activist group in Pemberton is helping out by hosting a weekend barbecue, bake sale and dog wash event this Sunday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pemberton Valley Lodge.

The mandate of the group, called the Pemberton Animal Wellbeing Society (PAWS), is to raise money for WAG as well as awareness about animal welfare.

In Whistler, WAG will partner with Joey Chan’s to host a Hawaiian Luau Wednesday, July 12 at the Creekside Chinese eatery. G-Willy will keep the dinner hopping with live acoustics as well as a limbo and hula-hoop contest, fire-spinning performances and a silent auction.

Tickets are $25 and include dinner, a tropical beverage and entertainment. Children are welcome.

WAG will also host its annual Dog Wash and Bake Sale fundraiser complete with barbecue Saturday, July 22 at the Whistler Fire hall.

Tickets for the Luau can be purchases at WAG, located next to the Nesters waste station, or at Joey Chan’s in Creekside. Call WAG at 604-935-8364 to purchase tickets over the phone.
