If Ullr was a Girl back for 2008

Last year more than 440 female skiers and snowboarders received tens of thousands of votes in the first If Ullr was a Girl contest hosted by Whistler-Blackcomb. The contest was held to celebrate women in snowsports, and showcase their diverse talents both on and off the snow.

Over the winter, visitors to the website narrowed the number of participants down in two rounds, after which point 14 pro and amateur athletes were selected to come to Whistler for four days of competitions — including an artistic showcase where participants were encouraged to show off their creative talents. The winner of the pro contest was Grete Eliassen, who later donated her cash prize of $25,000 to various charities. The winner of the amateur contest — who received a package including clothing, gear and sessions with a photographer — was Angie Seeley of Sun Peaks.

This year there will be a few differences for the contest.

The main difference is that online voting has been eliminated this year. Instead, a panel of judges will select 12 pro skiers and snowboarders and four wildcard athletes to showcase their talents at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival in April.

To participate, candidates are asked to put their profile online at www.ifullrwasagirl.com. The judges will make their decision on Feb. 29, bringing all four wildcard picks and 12 pro athletes to Whistler for a chance to win the $25,000 cash prize.

Watermark Productions, which produces the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, will be producing the competitions this year on behalf of Whistler-Blackcomb, while putting up half the prize purse.
