Police are investigating remains found south of Whistler after a cyclist reported something suspicious while out riding June 17.

"With the state of decomposition we can't tell (the age or identity of the victim), so it will come down to the coroners team being able to make those determinations on pretty much every factor including gender," said Sgt. Stephanie Ashton of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

"First and foremost the priority is to try and identify this person, so we can make contact with their family."

Ashton added that police are looking at cases of missing people in and around Whistler to see if the decomposed remains match any of those descriptions.

"That will be one of things we are doing right now — looking at who is missing in the area and see if that is a place to start from," said Ashton.

IHIT is on scene and will be preventing access to the area by the public for an extended period of time while the investigation continues, states a release on the investigation.

Whistler RCMP received a call on June 17, just after 6:00 p.m., from a local resident that had found what appeared to be human remains near a Whistler industrial complex.

Further analysis will be required to determine if foul play is a factor.
