Illegal rave ends in sex assault

Delta man charged after weekend incident

By Alison Taylor

A 45-year-old Delta man has been charged with sexual assault after a woman was attacked at an illegal rave in the Callaghan Valley.

The rave took place on Saturday, June 23. Whistler RCMP could not confirm where in the Callaghan the rave was taking place or how many people were there.

At 2 a.m. the woman was approached by a male who insisted on walking her home. When she refused, the male sexually assaulted her. She fought back and escaped.

That was the right thing to do.

“It could have gone differently had she not gotten away,” said RCMP Cst. Afzeel Yakub.

Roughly four hours later, at 6:30 a.m., a highways worker noticed a hitchhiker with head injuries standing near the Brew Creek entrance. He called the RCMP.

The man matched the description of the sex assault suspect and he was arrested.

Frederick Bugden was charged with sexual assault and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, June 27.

Whistler RCMP said there is no connection between the weekend sex assault and three sex assaults earlier this year.

“At this point there is nothing to suggest there is any connection in any way,” said Cst. Yakub.

The other sex assaults took place in early 2007 in three separate incidents. All three of the assailants were unknown to the women.

Police are again advising women not to be alone at night and try to stay where you know it’s safe.

Traffic enforcement ramped up

Whistler/Pemberton RCMP dealt with several drunk driving calls this past weekend.

The Pemberton detachment responded to three motor vehicle accidents over the weekend. Four people were arrested and put in jail for pubic drunkenness, four others received 24-hour driving prohibitions for being under the influence of drugs or alcohol and another person was issued a two-month driving prohibition.

Whistler police reported nine impaired driving calls.

Police are reminding the public that drinking and driving is not in anyone’s best interest.

With the summer season here, there is increased traffic enforcement.
