On Oct. 16, Jamie Addario was involved in a head-on collision outside of the Emerald Estates subdivision. All of the individuals involved in the accident survived, and are recuperating from their injuries.
For Addario, a former ski patroller and a Registered Nurse in the Sea to Sky corridor, it’s going to be a while before she can recuperate at home.
The 24-year-old Whistler resident sustained serious injuries to both of her legs that required extensive surgery. She will be in a wheelchair for at least the next eight weeks, and will have extremely limited mobility afterwards.
Climbing the almost 80 stairs to her home in Emerald Estates is just not an option.
After more than two weeks in the hospital, ICBC recently moved her into the Westin Resort and Spa, but has asked her to find other, more reasonably priced lodgings for her recovery.
"I could have gone home to my parents, but I wanted to be in the community. My physio is here, all my friends are here, and that’s been a huge positive for me, mentally. I wanted to be back in Whistler so I can rehabilitate myself properly," she said. "Everybody has been so amazing. Friends have been incredible, coming to support me when I was in the hospital and now in Whistler. This is really where I want to be."
Her friends are helping her to find a place to live that’s wheelchair accessible, but they could use some help.
"What would be ideal is a place that’s in the village or close to the village. It should have lots of space and be wheelchair accessible so I can go to physiotherapy every day, or to get groceries. It’s okay if it has a few stairs, little ramps can be made," said Addario.
She would likely need the place until late spring or early summer, which she says will be the earliest that she will be able to continue working in any capacity.
"For me nursing is far down the road. I miss it, but I have to concentrate on healing myself right now."
