International turntable experience

Dimitri From Paris, Bad Boy Bill and Playboy model alongside local luminaries

What: DJ Experience

When: Saturday, April 22

Where: Telus Conference Centre

The Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s DJ Experience will live up to its name this year and truly become the ultimate experience with international turntable stars Dimitri From Paris and Bad Boy Bill pairing up with a burlesque show from Playboy model Rachel Sterling.

"We stepped it up to a much bigger international level," said event producer Jon Tischuk , the man who otherwise brings Whistler the top dog DJ shows to Tommy Africa’s.

"It’s going to be huge. We’ve got eight hours of entertainment. What we are trying to do is capture the whole club and dance scene that exists in Whistler at the festival. It is going to be one of the biggest dance parties to hit Whistler."

Jet-setting faux jazz of the ’50s and Chicago’s baddest house grooves will spin out while The Pussy Cat Dolls’ sex kitten is taking a bubble bath amidst it all – it doesn’t get any hotter.

Bad Boy Bill, recently hailed by DJ Magazine as "One of America’s most popular and influential DJs, is infamous for his scratching and hip hop techniques that he meshes with house grooves. But, what truly makes this turntable luminary in demand globally is his multi-sensory approach with surround sound mixes and visuals. His lightening-quick mixes have landed him gigs at the world’s hottest clubs, from New York and Los Angeles to Peru, Colombia, Germany and Spain.

Bad Boy Bill will share the limelight with Dimitri From Paris, a man reputed for his trademark blend of retro grooves and contemporary house beats. He draws from the golden jazz era of the ’50s and early ’60s along with the groovier soundtracks of the ’70s. While Dimitri has released numerous albums, he is most famous for his A Night at the Playboy Mansion and After the Playboy Mansion.

Playmate Rachel Sterling was the perfect match for the Paris Playboy. Whistlerites will get a preview of Sterling but can see more next month: the supermodel, who has appeared in Maxim, Stuff, Italian Vogue and FHM, will be Playboy’s May 2006 Playmate of the Month. The burlesque starlet also toured with The Pussy Cat Dolls and performed at the Viper Room for red-carpet royalty, including the likes of Scarlet Johanson, Fergie and Carmen Electra.

Along with the international headliners B.C.’s own glitterati will weave in and out of the evening, including Whistler’s DJ Vinyl Ritchie, Jamie Vale and Kori K, as well Vancouver’s DJ Timeline and Jesse James.

"Dimitri is one of my favourite DJs for the last eight years," Vale said, noting he has played Dimitri’s tracks since he first started DJing at 16 years old. "His music is just really sexy and funky – sexy, groovy house. It’s the whole mood of the Playboy thing."

From music to movement, organizers are sexing up the affair with plenty of visual stimulation, including a grotto-inspired lounge. Live music adds an additional twist to the experience with a drummer and violinist jamming with the turntablists’ tracks.

"It’s going to be a great night with all the different parts of the industry coming together under one roof," Tischuk said. "Local (DJs) will start up with the burlesque performance at midnight then Dimitri, a local DJ and Bad Boy Bill for the feature set. Kori K will wrap up the night, so the locals are just going to go crazy."
