Intrawest moves Resort Development Group to regional offices 

Intrawest has announced a major reorganization of the company’s Resort Development Group.

The reorganization will see the relocation of Intrawest resort development functions and personnel to one of six regional offices: Vancouver, Montreal, Denver, Orland, Reno/Tahoe or in Euirope at a city to be determined. All Playground Real Estate Sales, Discovery Centre personnel and Customer service functions will remain based at the resorts.

The Whistler and Panorama teams will be relocated to a new office in Vancouver by July of 2003.

According to Paul Woodward, the north-west regional vice president of the Whistler arm of the Resort Development Group, the move will concentrate key people while giving the group more mobility to handle new opportunities.

"Globally, we were just looking for more flexibility in terms of reacting to new opportunities," he said.

"Vancouver is very close to Whistler, and is kind of in the centre of our geographic region. We are more flexible business-wise to take our core strength of people – of which we have a very strong core group in Whistler – to take advantage of the opportunities that are coming our way."

Woodward also says it will be an advantage to be closer to the airport, as members of the group do tend to travel often.

In Whistler, about 25 Resort Development Group (RDG) employees who are currently based at the office in Creekside will be affected by the move, but most have said they will move to Vancouver.

"The vast majority are happy, and most people are looking at it as a new opportunity," said Woodward.

"Really for us it’s basically an organizational move that is about concentrating our core strengths in one team and have those strengths applied to multiple resorts instead of creating that new resort office everywhere we go. We can take a proven team and move them into a new resort instead of having to staff a new office from scratch."

Most of Intrawest’s projects in Whistler are either completed or in progress, but RDG staff will still be actively involved in the resort, and in Panorama, from their new base in Vancouver.

The current projects in Whistler include:

• At Nature’s Door – 22 exclusive ski-in, ski-out homes in the Taluswood area overlooking Whistler Creek, ranging from three to four bedrooms and 2,330 to 2,700 square feet. Phase I is sold out and Phase II is available.

• The Four Seasons Resort – 273 suites ranging from 590 to 2,900 square feet. Some 242 suites are privately owned and managed by the hotel group. The suites sold out in five hours.

• Kadenwood – 21 single family ski-in, ski-out lots with 4,000 to 7,500 square feet buildable, accessible from Bayshores.

• Tynebridge at Spring Creek – 26 single family lots in the Spring Creek subdivision. Only a few lots are still available.

• The Glades at Spring Creek – 31 three and four bedroom townhomes near The Peaks development. Sold out in December of 2001.

• Upcoming projects include a luxury residences next to the Four Seasons Resort on the Blackcomb Benchlands; a "boutique" hotel in Whistler Village. In addition, Intrawest’s Whistler South Comprehensive Development Strategy calls for the creation of a third lodge, in addition to Legends and First Tracks, in the Creekside area.
