Intrawest’s expansion didn’t stop with Whistler and Copper mountains on March 14. The Vancouver-based company also snapped up Mont Ste. Marie, an 1,800 hectare resort about 90 kilometres north of Ottawa. Mont Ste. Marie is reputed to be one of the biggest but most neglected ski hills in the Gatineaus. A full destination resort development, including hotels, condominiums, restaurants, shops and year-round activities, is expected to be the long-range plan for the area. Terms of the deal have not been announced. Intrawest is about to float a $93 million stock offering on the New York Stock Exchange intended to finance development at several of its properties and to reduce debt. In addition to Whistler, Blackcomb, Copper and Mont Ste. Marie, Intrawest owns Panorama, Mont Tremblant, Stratton, Snowshoe and one-third of Mammoth Mountain. It also has major real estate partnerships at Keystone and Squaw Valley.
