Intrawest's Mammoth grip tightens Intrawest has increased its share of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area to 58 per cent from 51 per cent. The increase comes from a Mammoth Mountain re-purchase of its own common shares formerly held by the three second-generation members of founder Dave McCoy's family. McCoy still has voting control of the California resort because of the type of shares he holds, says an Intrawest spokesperson. The boost gives Intrawest a greater participation in the resort's earnings as the multi-ski resort giant moves closer to announcing plans to completely transform the resort village and slope-side facilities. A new village will be built and the mountain will see a lot of capital improvements, says Val Sharp at Intrawest. "We're going to make it the most exciting ski resort in the U.S." Mammoth is something like Whistler in that it has two mountains: Mammoth and June. Combined, they have more than 4,000 acres of skiable terrain, 38 lifts and attracted about 900,000 visitors in 1997. Summer activities include golf, an extensive mountain bike park, fishing, board sailing and water skiing on nearby lakes as well as hiking in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains. Yosemite National Park is an hour's drive away.
