Invasive species certification launched

Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council launching pilot certification program for horticulturalists

This week the Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council announced that it is launching a pilot certification program for horticulturalists to stop the spread of invasive species.

The certification program is one of the suggestions that came out of a workshop held last fall with landscapers, nurseries and other professionals. Other suggestions include a safe disposal site for species that can be toxic or that can spread easily, and a public education program.

The certification course will be available for free and will focus on proper identification of invasive plants, and how to manage the highest priority species in the corridor. Participants will also receive a guide with information on all 60-priority species.

Anyone is welcome to attend, although the course is being geared towards people working in the horticultural industry. To have your business certified, 50 per cent of the staff must attend the workshop, including all crew leaders.

Training will take place the week of April 18 and June 6. Exact times and registration information is available online at www.ssisc.info. Space is limited and spots are available on a first-come, first served basis.
