Re: “Independent, but at what cost?

Hi Max. I don't very often disagree with you but we're miles apart on this one.

It seems to me that this whole affair revolves around SNC-Lavalin's business and political ethics. I'm not innocent enough to believe that world business is played on Boy Scout rules. Ive worked in a SE Asian company where there was an account to keep track of bribes paid. I learned that we in Canada are very naive in our approach to ethics in general and in business in particular. I value that naivety.

I do not get too upset when SNC-Lavalin pays bribes in countries where they are almost compulsory, but international financial organizations are cracking down on this practice. I do get upset when they bring these practices back to Canada, such as they did with the Montreal Hospital scandal. Four people including SNC's CEO have pled guilty on that one so far.

I agree with JWR that there was a critical principle involved when SNC's lobbying attempted to have the rule of law overturned and Trudeau's inner circle pushed it too hard. To his credit, he had placed two strong women in positions where they were relative stars in his cabinet. When this first blew up, if he'd simply done a mea culpa it would have blown over quickly and he might have come out ahead. Instead, he's blown a promising leadership and wasted the talents of JWR and JP because he chose old style politics. The ladies didn't want or plan to be independents, they just wanted to right what they correctly saw as a wrong. I applaud them.

Re: “'How can I help you?'

I guess it all depends on the definition, Max. From Wikipedia: "...Normal profit is the profit that is necessary to just cover the opportunity costs of the owner-manager or of the firm's investors."
See: no mention of Guest Services or repeat business caused by customer satisfaction.
Excellent summary of the sad situation.

Re: “Letters to the Editor for the week of November 8

Thank you Erich Baumann and Lynn Hill for answering the outrageous opinion put forward by our MLA on voting systems. He's drunk far too much Kool-Aid.

Re: “A Q&A with Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz

Whistler-Blackcomb was particularly good at listening to their guests prior to Vail's involvement. You would typically get a response to an inquiry or criticism from the relevant manager the following day.

Now it is very difficult to find a place to give feedback, and it goes into the cloud apparently manned by reservation clerks somewhere. If you are lucky, you get stock answer #3 or #7.

If Vail is serious, they'd better start really listening and responding.
