Arts News: Caroline Adderson named writer-in-residence; Whistler Writing Society's AGM announced

Jann Arden and Alan Doyle are two of the headliners for this summer's Whistler Presents Free Concert Series.

The recipient of eight Juno Awards to date, Arden is known for her ballads "Could I Be Your Girl" and "Insensitive." She performs on Friday, Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m.

And Doyle, the lead singer of St. John's folk rock band Great Big Sea, brings his own six-piece band on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Now in its seventh season, Whistler Presents is offering eight free shows at Whistler Olympic Plaza in August and September.

The series kicks off during the Wanderlust festival with Elijah Ray at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3. "Innovative circus" performers Quixotic follow him at 8:30 p.m.

Seven-piece Bay Area funk band Con Brio is on stage at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, followed by sultry electro-jazz performer Charlotte Cardin.

And on Saturday, Aug. 5, funk, soul and R&B performers Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires headlines at 8:30 p.m., backed by soul and blues band Ron Artis II & The Truth, onstage at 7 p.m.

Vancouver hybrid five-piece Delhi 2 Dublin bring electronic music and traditional Indian instruments, with Punjabi-English vocals by Sanjay Seran on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7:30 p.m.

Indie band The Boom Booms perform on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m.

And the season closes on Saturday, Sept. 9, with Whistler favourites Ruckus Deluxe. The Celtic rockers perform near the finishline during GranFondo on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Adderson named Whistler writer-in-residence

Novelist Caroline Adderson has been named writer-in-residence by the Whistler Writers Festival.

Adderson, who has published four novels, two collections of short stories and a series of books for young readers, will be working with writers on their manuscripts and lead writing-craft workshops in September and October.

Whistler Writing Society AGM, plus free workshop

The annual general meeting (AGM) for the Whistler Writing Society, which oversees the Whistler Writers Festival, is taking place at the Whistler Public Library on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m.

All are welcome.

After the AGM, author kc dyer will being running a free workshop called The Peripatetic Writer — What to Keep in Mind When Travelling for Research.

Her most recent novel is the romantic comedy Finding Fraser.

Pemberton Art and Garden Festival

Pemberton Arts Council is hosting its second annual Art and Garden Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23.

The first day will focus on touring gardens around the village and the second day will cover the area north of Pemberton.

Both days, the festival begins at 9:45 a.m.; Saturday participants will meet at the Pemberton Community Barn, and Sunday participants at the junction of Reid Road and Portage Road.

Vehicles are required and carpooling is recommended.

Tickets are $30 and available at One Earth in Pemberton, Our Glass Works Studio in Birken, or online at www.pembertonartscouncil.com.
