Janyk/Hume fundraiser returns to Riverside Putting Greens

Three of Whistler’s top alpine racers are once again hosting a fundraiser and putting challenge at the Riverside Putting Greens.

Michael Janyk and Jeff Hume are currently on the national team and Scott Hume, Jeff’s younger brother, is with the B.C. Ski Team. The goal is to raise money for training expenses, as well as the new Janyk-Hume Bursary Fund to benefit Whistler Mountain Ski Club K2 or FIS athletes. Two $500 bursaries will be announced at the tournament. The bursaries will be awarded on the basis of need, athleticism, commitment and sportsmanship.

The entry fee – $50 for adults, $30 for anyone under 19 – includes 18 holes of putting, a barbecue and beverages, as well as a chance to win draw prizes.

This is the third year that the skiers have held this tournament and participation has been strong. The first year they raised closed to $9,000 and last year they raised close to $10,000. It’s a lot of money but divided three ways it doesn’t go too far for national team athletes.

"The money goes towards team fees and training fees. For myself and Jeff, the team fees are $5,000 a year, and for Scott they are a lot more," said Janyk.

In addition, the three athletes have already been to Calgary to train twice this year, and have two more trips planned during the course of the summer.

"Training is a full-time job for us, we’re in the gym six hours a day, five days a week, so it’s hard for us to come up with the money every year. This tournament helps us cover our expenses so we can just focus on training, and not worry about anything else," said Janyk.

You can help out Whistler’s aspiring World Cup stars by registering as an individual or as a team, by sponsoring a hole, or by making a donation of cash or prizes to the effort. There is also a silent auction with great prizes.

The tournament gets underway this Saturday, June 26 with shotgun starts at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

You can register there, or by contacting the athletes. Jeff and Scott Hume are available at 604-938-9507, 604-906-0732 or rhume@telus.net. Mike Janyk is available at 604-906-0780.
