Jerry’s gone but not forgotten

Dark Star pays tribute to Dead front man

By Shelley Arnusch

Who: Dark Star

Where: Boot Pub

When: Monday, Aug. 8

Longtime local Grateful Dead cover band Dark Star has always embodied the spirit of Dead front man Jerry Garcia.

But the band’s show this Monday at the Boot Pub will literally summon the spirit of the Dead.

Dark Star will reunite for a show paying tribute to Garcia on the 10 th anniversary of his moving on to the great Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test in the sky.

San Francisco native Garcia died Aug. 9, 1995 from heart trouble while spending time at a drug rehabilitation facility. He was inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Dark Star has ceased touring but reunites sporadically for shows in the Sea to Sky corridor. The band celebrated its own 10 th anniversary with a show at the Boot this past March.

Garcia may be gone but he has definitely not been forgotten. His spirit is alive and well in the jam band scene, in every carton of Ben & Jerry’s ‘Cherry Garcia’ ice cream and in every Caucasian dredlock and retro-revival tie-dyed item.

And on Monday night, it will live at the Boot Pub.
