Joan McIntyre Pottinger declares candidacy for Liberal nomination

Long time constituency president and research professional, Joan McIntyre Pottinger is the first person to declare her candidacy for the B.C. Liberal nomination in West Vancouver-Garibaldi, where incumbent MLA Ted Nebbeling is retiring.

Pottinger admitted she had just started preparing for next May’s provincial elections but she said she wants to continue with the same kind of philosophy as Nebbeling applied during his time in office.

"I would say I’d be more about continuing some of the work Ted did rather than being really different because I know that Ted, particularly in opposition, was racing up and down the corridor getting involved in the community," said Pottinger.

"You know Ted was helping Bowen get their municipality status, he was looking after people in Squamish when the mill was closing and of course he worked very hard for the 2010 Olympics.

"But Ted was MLA when the government was making some tough decisions and the economy was in a bit of a downturn, so it’s a bit of a privilege to be on board now when the tide is turning."

Pottinger has been intimately involved with the B.C. Liberals for 10 years, but she also has extensive business experience.

In 1980 she helped form the polling company McIntyre & Mustel Research Associates and continued to manage that company until she sold her interest in 1996 to work independently.

"I’ve had a life-long interest in politics, even with my background degree in political science and as a market researcher for 30 years," she said.

"I’ve also been involved with our constituency for 10 years and I’ve been riding president for six years so I’ve been supporting Ted from an organizational point of view.

"But the nice thing about it is that I’ve been able to get to know the constituency very well."

Pottinger has lived in the West Vancouver-Garibaldi area since 1983, first in Lions Bay and for the past 16 years in West Vancouver. She also has a condominium in Whistler where she has skied since she moved to B.C. from Ontario in 1976.

Pottinger is married with two children.

To date no other candidates for the Liberal nomination in West Vancouver-Garibaldi have come forth and no date has been set for the riding’s nomination meeting.
