Julia Murray confirmed to ski cross team

Ski Cross Canada confirmed the last four members of the national team for their inaugural season last week, adding two men and women to the roster.

Just as ski cross is a mix of ski racing and freestyle skiing, so is new addition Julia Murray. Murray was born and raised in Whistler as the daughter of former Crazy Canuck downhiller Dave Murray and former freestyle ski champion Stephanie Sloan.

Murray has a strong background in ski racing, recently competing at the FIS level nationally, while specializing in the speed events. She has been guaranteed a spot with the B.C. Ski Cross team this season, but recently won a place with the national team after an eight-day camp at Powder King in Prince George.

“It’s been a very exhausting week here in Powder King for both athletes and staff,” said Ski Cross Canada head coach Eric Archer. “We’ve had a great course and some very intense competition.”

Also named to the team was Alyssa Wilson, who has lived in Whistler on and off over the years before trying out for ski cross. Wilson is a former ski racer who competed for the UBC team before switching over to ski cross.

The two men added to the program were Cam Culbert and Dave Duncan. Culbert hails from North Bay, Ontario, and was a former Canadian Juvenile Champion. Duncan is a former varsity ski racer who competed at the international level.

Along with Ashleigh McIvor, the four-member women’s team is almost entirely Whistler-based. The exception is Anik Demers-Wild of Quebec.

On the men’s side, Whistler’s Davey Barr and Brian Bennett are on the team, along with Chris Del Bosco and Stanley Hayer.

The first event for the team is the Jeep King of the Mountain competition in Telluride, Colorado, which runs from Dec. 14-16.
