July hotel occupancy rates were up seven per cent over last year, according to Tourism Whistler.

That increase was "better than anticipated," according to Arlene Schieven, Tourism Whistler's vice president of marketing, and due mainly to last-minute bookings.

"The weather turned, we had all the last-minute business and we definitely saw that turnaround," Schieven said.

Whistler had a slow start to the summer, with the resort operating at just below 40 per cent occupancy in June. Whistler has become increasingly weather-dependent as it has become more reliant on the regional market, which tends to make last minute travel plans, influenced both by accommodation prices and weather conditions.
