Every parent can testify to the endless hours spent helping their kids master math.
Well some help is on the way.
On Monday, March 12 at 4 p.m. mathematician and founder of the JUMP math program John Mighton will be coming to Myrtle Philip school to offer a free session to parents.
The JUMP program has been assimilated into the Math Makes Sense program at both Myrtle Philip (MPCS) and Spring Creek Schools.
It offers, said MPCS principal Sharon Broatch, a step-by-step way for kids to master math.
“Math Makes Sense is very strongly based on problem solving and the kinds of mathematical calculations that JUMP math highlights are really valuable,” said Broatch.
“It is very user friendly and it fits in well with our numeracy program.
“John Mighton is a very inspirational speaker with a passion for math that is infectious. Parents will learn more about the program and the approach that he uses.”
JUMP was founded in 1998 by Mighton, who also authored The Myth of Ability , which is based on the program.
It is a federally registered charitable organization based in Toronto.
The program believes that all children can be led to think mathematically, and that with even a modest amount of attention every child will flourish.
Each JUMP worksheet is carefully crafted to break down math skills into small steps that virtually any child can master. Since the worksheets have all the instructions right on the page, it's easy for kids to follow along. JUMP Math is more than just the workbooks — it's a philosophy that any child can be successful at math.
