Juniors score low in challenging conditions

Junior golfers teed off at the Whistler Golf Club on July 10 and at Squamish Valley on July 17, the second and third stop on the Sea to Sky Junior Tour.

Although wind was once again a factor, you wouldn’t know it by some of the day’s top scores.

Scott Sellers, 16, kept it out of the water and the rough to score an amazing six over par 78. He started off strong, driving almost 280 yards to the green on the par four fourth hole and putting it in for an eagle. Sellers also won the men’s closest to the pin contest on the 17 th hole.

The next best score belonged to Shawn Crichton, 18, who finished the day with a seven over 79.

Third on the scoring list was Fraser McGlennan, 14, who finished the day with an 82. He was trailed closely in the 14 year old category by Gordan Yakura and Jordan Koren who posted rounds of 85 and 86 respectively.

David Rose posted the 12 and Under low gross with a round of 87.

The 13 year old junior men’s low gross when to Max King with a 91.

The 15 year old low gross went to Matt Hastings with an 85. The other competitors were close, shooting scores in the low 90s.

Behind Sellers, other top scores for 16 year olds belonged to Daniel Brown with an 84 and Vincent Semenuk with an 89. Semenuk also won the men’s longest drive contest on the 18 th .

Ben Heaps was the top 17 year old, posting a round of 84.

In the women’s competition, 14 year old Nadine Sykora posted the lowest score of the round, a gross of 92. Stephanie Sellers, 16, was second with a 96 as well as the longest drive honours. Megan O’Donnel shot a 99, and won the closest to the pin contest.

A total of 33 competitors turned out to the competition, and there is room for addition golfers at future dates.

At Squamish Valley on July 17, the rain threatened to become a factor but held off until after the competition.

Local Bryon Thom, 17, shot consistently and made six birdies to shoot a two under par 70.

Scott Sellers, who also knows the course, made two birdies to finish the day with one under par 71.

Matt Hastings made two birdies to finish with a 79, while Gordon Yakura played consistently to also finish the day with a 79.

The lone eagle of the day belonged to Vancouver’s Mike Rose, 12, who potted a five iron shot from over 150 yards and finished the day with a 91.

A number of golfers also posted scores in the 80s, including Vincent Semenuk, Shawn Crichton, and Ryan Worrod of Whistler, with an 80 and an 81, and an 89; and Daniel Brown, Mike Heenan, and Ben Heaps of Vancouver with an 85, an 86 and an 89.

Stephanie Sellers was once again the top woman, finishing the day with a 97.

The next competition is at Furry Creek on July 25.

The cost is $30, or $25 for junior club members. The cost includes green fees, a snack at the ninth and a dinner at the club.
