K2s wrap up nationals

Whistler's Kelly Steeves comes in at eighth place

The K2 Nationals continued at Georgian Peaks and Craigleith ski clubs in Ontario following the speed events last week, with the giant slalom taking place on Mar. 24 and the slalom the following day.

B.C. skiers didn't fare as well as they did in the speed events, although Mia Henry of Fernie managed a second place finish. Whistler's Kelly Steeves was eighth, Rachel Vander Veen 14th, Stefanie Fleckenstein 16th, Mikayla Martin 20th and Elizabeth Kepl 66th.

In the men's giant slalom the top B.C. athletes was Revelstoke's Lachlan Hicks in 16th, with Sam Mulligan of Grouse in 19th. The top Whistler skier was Riley Seger in 22nd, with Cameron Alexander in 60th.

In the slalom, Mia Henry led B.C. once again in sixth. Rachel Vander Veen was the top Whistler skier in 14th, with Kelly Steeves in 19th and Mikayla Martin in 57th.

On the men's side, Marc Leroux just missed the podium by just 0.11 second to take fourth place overall. Dalton Pehota was 39th.

Next up for the K2 skiers are the Rio Tinto-Alcan Whistler Cup international juvenile ski races in Whistler, taking place from April 8 to 10. Roughly 400 skiers aged 11 to 14 will represent 24 nations at the event, which is entering its 18th year.
