Re: “Business owners search for answers to labour struggles

Dear chamber of commerce;
Anybody with a basic grasp of economics should understand what the issue is with the labor market. You have landlords gouging the workforce with extreme rent prices and business owners RELYING on an 80% annual turnover in staff to hire temp, contract, part time roles with no benefits and to keep labor costs at minimum wage. Ask them why? "Because its Whistler". As Mr Somerville quoted above, this is an accepted business model in the Whistler Township. Welcome to the so-called "Whistler Bubble".

Staff not housed in staff accommodation regularly have to move as owners double and sometimes triple the rent in the winter season because they believe the market can handle it. Possibly for a season but its unsustainable living conditions which forces people out of town. Simply chatting to people around town quickly highlights the issue - shared rooms and working two or three jobs to sustain themselves.

Issues with greedy landlords are not documented or reported. Most don't bother because they're there for a season to have fun and have to put up with seasoned exploiters who know just how to work the system. Plus most of the workforce are young and not armed for the fight - and instead of having a local third party presence to call these people out you have to file a dispute with the RTO. Lawyers aren't interested, go ask Race and co.

In regards to Mr. Barajas' comments on Mexican Corner, I would be interested in seeing the results of a 360degree feedback survey on his management style. A suggestion would be to have a chat with anyone that's worked there in the past. Perhaps you should present that survey to the chamber for discussion.

In short, this is a swinging pendulum that has gone the way of the property and business owner for some time. In economical terms, the "free hand of the market" is now slapping you in the face.
