King of the Rail draws a crowd

More than 54 skiers and snowboarders, and at least twice as many spectators, turned out on Saturday, Dec. 29, for the first King of the Rail rail jam of the season. The event took place at the base of Blackcomb with four rails and two lines for participants to choose from.

There were prizes for the winners of different age categories, and the athlete with the most overall votes was presented a cash prize of $100 based on the number of participants. All participants were also eligible to win draw prizes — including Atomic skis, Sapient snowboards, and products from Nintendo, DNA, Telus, Showcase Snowboards, Glacier Shop, and other sponsors. Tara Hickey won the snowboard, and Vincent Martin claimed the skis.

There are a few changes for this year. The entry fee has been bumped up to $15, but participants no longer need a night skiing pass. A portion of the entry fees go back to the athletes who get the most votes after the jam. The athletes were given an hour and a half to session the rails, and then vote for the skiers or riders that they felt had the best moves.

The next King of the Rail is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 12. Registration starts at 5 p.m. in the Blackcomb Daylodge, and ends at 6 p.m., when the competition gets underway. Helmets are mandatory, and mouthguards and other padding is strongly recommended.
