Kokannee series continues with snowy giant slalom

Soft conditions but lots of racers

The second Kokanee Valley Race Series event of the season, a giant slalom on Gandy Dancer, took place last Thursday, Jan. 12 with another good turnout of racers and soft-packed terrain.

Despite the softer conditions, some of the faster competitors were extremely close, separated by as little as a tenth of second over two runs.

The next event, after today’s (Jan. 19) super-G on Blackcomb, is a giant slalom on Whistler on Jan. 26. You can register in advance at any Whistler-Blackcomb Guest Relations or Ski School Sales location, or on the day of the race in the race centre at the top of the Garbanzo Chair until 9:45 a.m.

The cost is $20 to enter, which includes the race, an après party with video from the day, and an opportunity to win draw prizes, including a pair of Atomic skis. On Jan. 12 the skis went to Peter Layll.

Peak to Valley racers needed

For anyone who has ever wanted to compete in the annual Appleton Rum Peak to Valley race – from the top of The Saddle to the base of Creekside on the world’s longest giant slalom course – Whistler-Blackcomb is compiling a list of alternates if any of the racers from other teams pull out for whatever reason. To get on this list, send an e-mail to Terry Phillips in the Whistler-Blackcomb Events Department, mailto:tphillips@intrawest.com,tphillips@intrawest.com, or call 604-905-2034.

The Peak to Valley takes place Feb. 3-4, with two members from each team of four racing on each day.

Tickets are still available to the Awards Dinner Party in the Roundhouse Lodge for non-racers through the Events Department.

This is a popular event, selling out in the summer within days of going on sale. For more information check out www.whistlerblackcomb.com/todo/events/detail/peaktovalley.htm
