Kostner injured in downhill training

On Dec. 4, Italian World Cup star Isolde Kostner crashed during a training run on the Olympic Downhill Course at Lake Louise. She was evacuated by helicopter from the site, and taken to Banff’s Mineral Springs Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition at press time Wednesday. The extent of her injuries was not announced, but she is not expected to race this weekend.

Kostner is a four-time World Cup downhill winner at Lake Louise, and was a favourite to win again this year.

Fernie’s Emily Brydon, who missed most of the last two years of racing with knee injuries she sustained in a few crashes of her own, was the next racer after Kostner.

"You just try and put all that stuff out of your mind," said Brydon. "You try not to think about why there was a delay. There is fear in everything we do. Your heart goes out to the person injured, but the only way to make it down is to put those thoughts out of your head."

The women are racing two downhill World Cup events on Friday and Saturday, and a super-G event on Sunday.

Mélanie Turgeon was the top Canadian in training Wednesday, placing 15 th .
