The Kokannee Valley Race Series wrapped up on March 27 with a final giant slalom event on Blackcomb.

This year’s series eclipsed past years in terms of participation, with more than 100 racers in many events. The weather also co-operated for the most part, and only one event was cancelled this year during a snowstorm.

Because a number of athletes have raced in most or all of the events, there were a number of close races for category titles.

Once again, age bested experience in the final event of the year. Grace Oaks, skiing unopposed in the women’s 60 and over category, finished with a time of one minute, 31.26 seconds – fast enough to have won the women’s 19 to 29 category.

Doug Deeks, racing in the men’s 60 to 69 category, would have finished first in the 50 to 59 group, fourth in the 40 to 49 group, fourth in the 30 to 39 group, and first in the 19 to 29 group with a time of 1:19.62.

At the last Kokannee apres event of the season at the Crab Shack, Mark Stravens won the draw prize for the Atomic Supercross skis.
