A large fire in the upper floors of a Whistler condominium unit at the Northstar complex has left dozens homeless.
The fire broke out around 11 p.m. and firefighters spent the next several hours fighting the blaze. Many other units in the complex have been water damaged.
No one was injured in the blaze though there has been extensive loss of personal goods.
Posts on social media are reporting about 50 people had to find alternative accommodation last night.
Whistler Fire Chief Geoff Playfair told CBC that despite the size, the fire was mostly contained to the upper floors of the building.
"The extent of the damage, it's mainly in the roof spaces and some of the common interior open air hallways and stairs," said Playfair.
"As far as I know … there's little fire damage to the units, but significant water damage."
The cause is under investigation.
Local businesses and residents are already rallying to help. The Hilton messaged on Facebook that they would treat those who were displaced to brunch, as well as collect donations, and the Red Cross is offering help as well.
Said one of those who was affected on Facebook,"Watched most of my life's belongings burn in front of my eyes last night - thanks for all of the love and support though this towns awesome!
