The fiddle is going back in its case.

April 23 and 24 mark the end of a musical era for Leanne & Kyla, the local duo who have been a mainstay at the Dubh Linn Gate playing Celtic music.

Both performers, familiar faces for local audiences, are pursuing additional musical projects at this time.

"It’s been great, and we’ve had a couple of people come up to us and say ‘we came here to ski, but we’ll come back top hear you play,’" says Leanne Lamoureux.

The former windsurfing teacher and ski instructor is inspired by the likes of Joni Mitchell. She is heading out on a solo tour, with stops in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and P.E.I.

"There’s been a resurgence of this kind of music, with people like Natalie McMaster and Ashley McIssac picking up the fiddle, and there’s always a great response out east where almost everybody plays some kind of instrument."

Lamoureux is reuniting her band, Raven Revival, with songs from her album A Piece of the Pie for Whistler’s Earth Day celebrations on April 20 at the Town Plaza gazebo. The CD, released a couple of years ago, is a combination of Celtic, Spanish, and North American folk influences.

Under the name Raven, the band was prominent on Whistler’s open mic scene at the Boot during the 1996-97 season. Musicians who have played with the band include Stephen Vogler, Douglas Kerr, and Phil Richard.

Among Lamoureux’s new material is a song called Manifestation, which is about "dreaming and making things come true."

"Going out east to the Maritimes keeps me fresh, and then I come back to the home base here in Whistler," says Lamoureux.

Meanwhile, Kyla Uyede is pursuing opportunities in a whole different vein: break beats and hip hop. She recently cut a demo with a group of Vancouver DJs, and performed with Breakestra at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The duo says they may play one more show together in August.
