LegaciesNow funds cycling

Rubber tires don’t have much in common with P-Tex bases or ice skates, but that hasn’t stopped the 2010 LegaciesNow program – which was created to put B.C. athletes on the podium in the 2010 Winter Games – from making a $12,500 grant to cycling in the province.

The money will go towards a Cycling B.C. program called Kick Start, which will train new mountain bike, road, track and BMX coaches in communities across the province.

"The key to developing Olympians is in the coaching," said Tom Fawsitt, the executive director of Cycling B.C. "Kids needs good coaching and we plan to provide just that thanks to this 2010 LegaciesNow grant."

The Kick Start program will be targeted to communities Fawsitt calls "hot beds" for cycling in the province. Whistler is on that list, as are Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George and Kimberly.

Cycling B.C. organizes and sanctions the B.C. Cup road and mountain bike series, the provincial championships, and various events and clinics.

LegaciesNow was created as part of the Vancouver 2010 Bid’s drive to produce lasting sports legacies in the province, as well as foster the development of future Olympians at home.
