In the past week the provincial 2010 LegaciesNow program has made significant contributions to communities hosting events around the province.
On Nov. 10, LegaciesNow announced "significant" financial support for the FIS Freestyle World Cup Finals at Apex Mountain, and a Freestyle Canadian Series event at Cypress Mountain in 2006. Both grants are part of the B.C. Hosting Now initiative, which was created to bring more events to the province, while giving homegrown athletes the opportunity to compete.
"This support has assisted in bringing one of the pinnacle skiing events of the season, the FIS World Cup Finals in Freestyle Skiing, to the province of British Columbia," said Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge. "This will not only be an appropriate homecoming for Canadian athletes after the Torino Games, but will mark an important beginning of the new quadrennial as the world turns its attention to Canada and B.C."
In total 12 communities across the province will share $245,000 in funding, assisting in the hosting of 17 major sporting events.
The Penticton World Cup will receive $35,000 of that money, while the Cypress event will receive $10,000.
In addition to the freestyle events, the Hosting B.C. fund will also provide $10,000 to Whistler to host the Pontiac GMC National Championships for alpine skiing from March 19-27, 2006.

2005 Canadian Cross Country Running Championships, Vancouver – $10,000
Mel Jazac Jr. International Swim Meet, Vancouver – $10,000
Hawood NorAm Canada Cup (cross country), Vernon – $10,000
Canada Cup FINA Grand Prix (diving), Victoria – $35,000
Commonwealth Game Trials/Senior National Championships (swimming) – $10,000
Applications for the next round of Hosting B.C. grants will be available in December at www.2010legaciesnow.com.
