Hidden all winter behind the construction of the new library, the Whistler Museum and Archives is stepping out this summer and taking programming to the community.
The museum is hosting its annual Lego competition on Sunday, July 9, with this year’s theme being "mountain life." And the museum is launching a new summer walking tour program, called Walking Through Time.
The goal for the Lego event is to foster a sense of community by getting participants thinking about what Whistler means to them. Kids will get to flex their creative muscles by building an original Lego sculpture depicting their favourite part of Whistler. Participants will also get a chance to win prizes, generously donated by Lego and local businesses.
The Lego competition will be held at the Spruce Grove Field House, between 1 and 3 p.m. July 9. The cost is $10 per family. For more information or to pre-register call the museum at 604-932-2019. Space is limited, so register early.
Meanwhile, the museum will be offering three walking tours each week starting July 1, one on Saturdays and two on Thursdays. The tours will take participants on a journey into Whistler’s pioneer past, through the vision that turned Whistler from a remote fishing resort into an international mountain resort, and into the future including the 2010 Olympics and beyond. The tour follows the walkways of Whistler Village and includes interactive displays and insider knowledge of the community.
Starting the first week of July and continuing through August, the tours run on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and Thursday at 1:30 and 7 p.m., rain or shine. Meet at the museum in the heart of the Village (4329 Main Street, next to the library). Space is limited. For more information call 604-932-2019.
