I am concerned about the increasing number of cyclists and roller-bladers who are not wearing protective gear when they are pursuing their sport in Whistler. All the pros around us know the reasons why it is so important, so Im confused to why amateurs are not following their example. I am referring to the lack of helmets mostly, because if a head injury can be avoided well, most of us have seen the consequences.
I have been considering writing this letter for a few weeks now, but was jolted into action after visiting G.F. Strong Rehab Centre last week. It is a very sad place full of young people who made some poor choices and like many of us had probably ignored some safety advice.
Its frustrating to think that accidents could be avoided if helmets were easy to enforce, but even though it is the law to wear one, the problem still exists and its getting worse. Maybe if we consider the impact on us as taxpayers we will be alerted to this issue and consider better methods of enforcement. Any ideas?
