The Whistler Public Library will get a $1,300 boost in its funding from the provincial government this year, bringing its total provincial funding to almost $31,000 for 2003/04.
George Abbott, minister of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services, announced a total increase in funding of $300,000 for libraries province-wide. The ministry will hand out almost $9 million this year.
"We are committed to providing resources that local communities and their residents depend upon," he said.
"Library funding has been maintained across the province and we are increasing the per capita grant for public libraries in our heartlands communities."
Based on the needs of each library, the funding will go towards books and audio-visual materials as well as public access computers, electronic information databases and Internet access. It will also goes towards general operating expenses, such as staffing and non-capital items.
The Pemberton District Library Association also received an increase this year of almost $1,300, up to $14,600.
