Library, museum want input

With a long-anticipated new building in the planning stages the Whistler Museum and Archives Society and the Whistler Public Library are inviting members of the public to an open house to discuss what should be in the building.

"We have ideas and visions of what we think should be in the new building, but we want to hear what the public wants and we want to see if they confirm the direction we’re going," said Anne Fenwick, chair of the library board.

The municipality has committed $2.5 million toward the new building and a fund-raising campaign is expected to start later this year. The site for the new building has not been finalized but it likely will be the same location as the library and museum currently occupy, on Main Street next to Village Park Central in Village North.

Fenwick said there won’t be any plans or models for the building at the open house on March 3, but members of both groups will discuss goals and visions.

One example is a fireplace and living-room atmosphere at the entrance, where people can read and relax in comfort.

"This building is going to do us for along time," said Fenwick. "We want to fill the needs of the people who live here, the weekenders and also the destination visitors."

The open house will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on March 3 at the library and museum. A short presentation will be made at 5 p.m.
