Anything Can Happen When You Read!

The Whistler Public Library is once again inviting 3-9 year old children, to participate in this year’s Summer Reading Club. As in previous years, the club is absolutely free and promising to be a lot of fun for its participants.

"Anything Can Happen When You Read!" a slogan based on Alison Campbell’s poem by the same title, is the theme for this summer’s reading extravaganza. Special programs for children will be held on Wednesdays throughout months of July and August. Three and four year olds will be accommodated during the 11 a.m.-noon session, while programs for 5-9 year olds will be held at 4-5 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. Activities will include stories, songs, crafts, games and much more. Upon registration, club members will receive a reading log to keep track of their reading adventures.

This year, the library is very pleased to host Canadian children’s writer Victoria Miles for the Evening With an Author Session. Ms. Miles, an established writer of numerous information books for children, combines her love of nature and science with her literary talent. Her books include: Wild Science, Cougar Kittens, Bald Eaglets, Sea Otter Pup and Spotted Owlets. This fun and exciting event will take place at the Whistler Public Library on Wednesday, July 7 th , at 7 p.m. The author presentation is most appropriate for 5-9 year old children.

Summer reading programs encourage children to read for fun, and maintain their reading skills outside their educational curricula. Anything Can Happen When You Read provides children with an opportunity to explore their individual reading interests, and establish regular family reading times. The Whistler Public Library strongly encourages you to support your child’s participation in this program, an important steppingstone in literacy development of all children.

The Summer Reading Club reaches over 65,000 youngsters in British Columbia every summer and is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association and Whistler Public Library with the assistance of the Public Library Services Branch, Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services, Murray Coell, Minister.
