On your mark, get set, Write!

Whistler Public Library (WPL) is holding its Fourth Annual Young Adult Writing Contest (YAWC) and encouraging Whistler youth to share their creativity and talents with the entire community. Kids, ages 12-18, are invited to enter poetry or an original short story in the upcoming contest. Submissions will be accepted until Oct. 31, 2003, and winners will be announced shortly thereafter. Contest entry forms are now available to be picked up at the Whistler Public Library. The contest is divided into four categories: short story for ages 12-14, short story for ages 15-18 and poetry for ages 12-14, and 15-18. Contest winners will receive $75, $40 and $25 for first, second and third prize, respectively. All winning entries will be published on the library’s Web site.

Accompanying the Young Adult Writing Contest is a Creative Writing Workshop to be held on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m., at the library. This interactive workshop, run by a member of the Whistler Writers Group, will give the contestants an excellent opportunity to polish their work, and explore new writing styles. If any of the contest participants would like to have their work edited during the workshop, please hand in your work to the library before Oct. 23. The workshop is a separate and yet related event, however, one does not have to sign up for the session in order to participate in the YAWC. Similarly, you don’t have to enter the contest to be eligible to sign up for the workshop. Pre-registration is required. Call 604-932-5564.

So, if you like mysterious or entertaining stories, ghazaal or free verse poetry, and above all, like to write, then enter the Whistler Public Library’s Young Adult Writing Contest. Contact Agnes Gorgon, Children’s Librarian at 604-932-5564 or e-mail: agorgon@whistlerlibrary.ca for more information.
