And the winners are…

The Whistler Public Library is proud to announce the winners of this year’s Young Adult Writing Contest. The contest encouraged Whistler’s 12-18 year olds to submit an original piece of poetry or a short story. A panel of judges evaluated all works, and the winners were selected. There were four categories in the contest: Short story works for 12-14 year olds, and 15-18 year olds, along with Poetry for 12-14 year olds and 15-18 year olds.

The Honorable Mention, in the short story category for 12-14 year olds, was awarded to Lisa Laird a 13-year-old student at Whistler Secondary School, a Tae Kwon Do and soccer aficionado, for her work titled A Chance to Dream. When asked why she likes to write, Lisa replied that writing allows her to use her imagination.

Twelve-year-old Bronwyn Lawrie, took home the bronze, and a $25 reward, for her short story titled: Of Pigs Blood, Traitors, and Witches. Bringing new ideas into the world was this Grade 7 student’s motto for writing.

Kids for Kids, Alli Wake’s composition, was awarded the second prize, accompanied by a $40 gift. Apart from writing, Alli, a Grade 7 student at Whistler Secondary School, enjoys dancing, skiing, snowboarding and ballet.

The winner of the Young Adult Writing Contest’s was 13-year-old Maddie Reid, receiving a $75 reward. Maddie’s story Phoebe’s Muffin was deemed exceptional by our panel of judges. A busy young lady, Ms. Reid dances, plays the violin, enjoys acting, reading and of course… writing.

Changing gears to poetry, the winner of the first prize for 12-14 year olds is Paige Harley for her work titled A Wish Upon a Star.

The first prize for the 15-18 year old age group was assigned to Sarah Brackstone’s Watercolour.

The Whistler Public Library would like to thank everyone for sharing their creativity and partaking in the Young Adult Writing Contest. We all had the pleasure of reading your works, and hope that we can benefit from your creations in the future years. Thank you, and way to go Whistler youth!
