Our Summer Reading Club will kick off with a visit from Victoria Miles, author of the newly published Wild Science: Amazing encounters between animals and the people who study them. The free reading will start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7 th at the library and is suitable for children ages 5 and up and a caregiver.
Wild Science
features 10 world-renowned animal scientists – including information on how they decided to become researchers, the stories behind their fascinating jobs and scientific information about the animals they study. The animals include endangered Vancouver Island marmots, grizzly bears, manatees, polar bears, sea otters and leatherback turtles. The settings range from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island, from the Arctic to Arizona, and from Florida to California. And our guides are the experts, the wildlife scientists who spend their lives ensuring the survival of these animals.Accompanied by extraordinary full-colour photographs and black-and-white line drawings, Wild Science will engage even the most reluctant young readers and the most enthusiastic young scientists.
Victoria Miles writes for children and adults. Her books for kids include the bestselling Sea Otter Pup as well as Bald Eaglets, Cougar Kittens and others. Her short story, The Strait of Orca, was part of the award-winning Fate of the Strait series in 1998.
Victoria Miles was your basic "B" student in high school biology. She did better in English Literature and History – that’s where the stories seemed to be. But field trips were a different matter. "Somebody would twist their ankle (drama!), lunch tasted better outside and we’d all see things we weren’t expecting." In Wild Science , Miles has combined her love of field trips and nature to tell the stories of some of the people who got "A"s in Biology.
The author will also be reading at the Squamish Public Library on July 7 at 2 p.m. and at the Pemberton Public Library on July 8 at 11 a.m. The author tour is made possible with a grant from the Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services, Public Library Services Branch.
Anything can happen when you read
The Summer Reading Club reading logs have arrived for all those registered and for those who have not yet registered. Come to the library and pick up your log and start reading! The club will run on Wednesdays from July 7 th to Aug. 18 th . There is a session for 3-4 year olds from 1:30-2:30 p.m., for 5-9 year olds from 4-5 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. Here is a list of the themes for each session:

Canada Day
The Library will be closed on July 1 st for Canada Day. We will re-open Friday July 2 nd at 10 a.m.
