lifeguard dies

A 22-year-old lifeguard at the Meadow Park Sports Centre was killed Tuesday when she was crushed between two vehicles in the parking lot. Sonia Dery had been a part-time lifeguard at the pool since Oct. 31, 1995. She was on a break when the accident occurred. Two other lifeguards attended until an ambulance arrived to rush her to emergency, where she later died. The pool was cleared of the public and closed when the accident occurred, but re-opened at 2 p.m. It was closed again for the remainder of the day just after 3 p.m. when staff received news of Dery’s death. A crisis-counselling expert was called in to assist staff in dealing with the accident. The municipality is assisting the family with arrangements. Funeral services will be announced shortly.
