Lights, cameras, action on youth

Youth are swept off the cutting room floor with the Get Reel Filmmaking Workshop for Youth July 3-8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Whistler children between the ages of 13 and 18 will create a short documentary-style film about global warming looking at the topic Save Our Snow with a focus on how the community can help save Whistler’s glaciers.

The workshop will give youth access to professional equipment over the six-day, practical-hands-on workshop led by industry professionals. Students will learn about camera operation, lighting scenes, recording sound, setting up a shot and working with performers. Youth will switch hats as director, production manager, camera operator, sound recorder and editor.

The final product will premier at the 2007 Whistler Film Festival as part of its Youth Outreach Program, which is sponsored by the Dave Murray Summer Ski and Snowboard Camp.

The workshop is $129 per student, meals not included.

The registration deadline is June 25. Space is limited. Call 604-938-3204 to register.

Helping out kids have fun

Volunteers are needed for the Whistler Children’s Festival July 14 to 15 in Creekside.

The family festival packs in two days of art, music, magic and crafts with mainstage shows, roaming performers and a variety of workshops.

Help children participate in this memorable weekend of crafts, contests, scavenger hunts, music, acrobatics and storytelling by getting involved.

Volunteers are needed for every aspect of the festival, including workshop instructors and assistants, mascots and registration.

In addition to putting smiles on kids’ faces, volunteers can look forward to food, drinks, sun, swag and a volunteer wrap-up party at Dusty’s.

To volunteer, contact the Whistler Arts Council at 604-938-9221 or info@whistlerartscouncil.com.
